Digital Signage Explained

What is Digital Signage?

There are many different types of digital signs, but in general, any screen utilized to deliver content to a specific location is considered digital signage. Websites deliver content to screens, but broadly.  Same with television programming.  Anyone with the proper technology can access a website or TV program, so the critical definition of digital signage is that it is location based.  That still leaves an awful lot that falls under this category of digital signage and that is part of the reason that selecting the proper combination of hardware and software can be so challenging for business managers looking to deploy Digital Signs.

There are two categories that together make up any digital signage display.  The first category is hardware: the screen that displays the content, and the media player that delivers it.  For very simple Digital Sign display needs there are a few hardware solution that can combine these component into a single device.  However for anything beyond the simplest needs it is necessary to buy the screen and media player separately.  Because they are usually separate, you must carefully evaluate each component to make sure that each piece is compatible with your feature demands and budget for your Digital Signs.  The second category is software.  Software is needed both to manage the presentation timeline and to deliver it to the hardware.  Software can be purchased, or as is becoming increasingly common, delivery via a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution for a monthly or annual fee. Specialty Digital Signage hardware often comes with embedded software or a mandatory SaaS subscription.  The Digital Signage by Nova Digital Signs platform included a SaaS solution at no extra charge and no subscription fee.

The many applications of Digital signage include:

    1.  Digital Menus - promote high margin items, reduce printing costs, create a modern brand, instantly update availability changes.

    2.  Retail POS - Studies have shown increased in-store buying decisions, promote high margin items, reduce printing costs, create a modern look.

    3.  Assisted Living Facilities - Communicate special events, use for emergency broadcasting, reduce signage costs and motivate participation.

    4.  Gyms - Use Digital Signs to promote classes and events, broadcast reminders immediately before classes, deliver entertainment, create a modern brand.

    5.  Banks - Promote rate specials and new services, let customers know how you are protecting them and reduce perceived wait times.

    6.  Education - Schools from K-12 and colleges and universities are using Digital Signs to make announcements and keep students informed.

    7.  Churches - Use Digital Signs to keep folks informed about weekly events, schedule changes and fund raising events.  Reduce printing costs.
